Agarwood is not simply a type of wood. It is a resinous transformation of Aquilaria tree heartwood, triggered by natural injury or fungal infection.
When the tree is wounded — by insects, storm damage, a broken branch — it responds by producing a dense aromatic resin to protect itself. Over years, sometimes decades, this resin saturates the surrounding wood, transforming it from ordinary pale timber into something dark, heavy, and extraordinarily fragrant.
Only a portion of any Aquilaria tree becomes true fragrant agarwood. The rest remains white, odorless wood.
This is why agarwood is one of the most valuable natural materials on earth — and why it is listed under CITES Appendix II, requiring documentation for all legal international trade. The scarcity is structural. The resin cannot be manufactured. It cannot be rushed. The tree makes it, or it does not exist.
When you burn an incense stick made from real agarwood, you are burning something a tree spent years creating.
Ban Tou refers to agarwood formed at the stump, root collar, or damaged base sections of an Aquilaria tree — the areas that experienced the most sustained natural injury and therefore produced the highest concentration of healing resin.
